  • Care for Everyone in Our Common Home

In the First Story of Creation found in the Book of Genesis, God creates the heavens and the earth. We are all familiar with the creation story and it is one that continues to be studied and explored and provide insight into our own human understanding. While there are many interesting elements to the creation story, I always found the idea that God needed rest perplexing. The bible states:

“Thus the heavens and the earth and all their array were completed. Since on the seventh day God was finished with the work he had been doing, he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken.” Gn 2:1-2

I had always understood that God was all-powerful and so the idea of God getting tired, of needing rest, contradicted my understanding. It wasn’t until a recent retreat that I was shown a new way of reading that scripture. The insight provided to me was that God did not need rest but rather created rest on the seventh day. God knew that rest and relaxation was important for us. That interpretation of scripture brought new understanding to my own life. It is important for us to take a break, to relax and rejuvenate from the work and in doing that we become better people.

May Spring Break then be a time for all of us to relax and renew ourselves.
