Thunder News Flash – June 1, 2019

May 31, 2019
  • What do you want of me, Lord?

On Wednesday, our Grade 7 students completed their Sacraments of Initiation when they were confirmed by Archbishop Miller.  The students received the gift of the Holy Spirit to help them strengthen their relationship with God.  Most children are baptized as infants, and therefore this is a choice that their parents make for them. Confirmation, then, is a beautiful sign where these preteens acknowledge their desire to continue their faith journey.  Thank you to Mrs. Dos Santos for preparing the students so well throughout this school year, and to the parents who have supported their child’s spiritual development since birth.  You should all be very proud of these amazing young people, as we definitely are.

  • Sports Day

We are very excited that Sports Day is coming up on Friday, June 7th, and about our “old fashioned” Sports Day theme.  The students will come to school that day dressed in either their gym strip or their Thunderwear, but they may accessorize to represent their colour team – either red, yellow, green or blue.  This could mean some face paint, or hair colour; this could mean a bandana in their hair or on their arm; this could mean coloured laces in their running shoes – the possibilities are only limited by the imagination of the students and their parents.  However, please do not feel that you need to spend lots of money on these accessories, as each team from each grade has created a poster at school and they are currently learning the cheer for each colour team created by our Grade 6 students.  Right now the forecast is showing possible rain for Friday, June 7th, so if that is the case please send your child to school dressed to keep them dry for the outdoor games.  However, if that changes please send your children to school with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water.  The students will be provided with a treat at the rest station, and a hotdog lunch.  We are looking forward to a wonderful day!

  • Parent Prayer Group

Why not celebrate the Easter season by joining the Parent Prayer Group in praying the rosary for our school community at 8:30am on Thursday mornings.  Please note that they meet each week in the school Library.  Small children and babies are welcome.

  • Family In Need

As you may have heard, St. Mary’s School in Chilliwack tragically lost their Grade 5 teacher last week.  John Mills passed away in his sleep during the night of May 13th.  He leaves behind his wife Seana, and their 10 year old son, Liam.  Unfortunately John’s wife had just undergone surgery so she was off work, and this is leaving John’s family in a very challenging financial situation.  A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up to help his family, and if you can help in any way please click here.

  • Community Coffee

The school will be hosting our final Community Coffee for this school year on Tuesday, June 4th at 8:30am in the school Library.  This is a wonderful opportunity for community members from both the school and the parish to join together for some coffee, treats and great conversation.  Bring your toddlers as well as there will be toys and colouring pages set out for those children who are not yet in school.  We hope to see you there!

  • Early Dismissal Day

We will have our next early dismissal day on Tuesday, June 4th.  Please send your children to school with a snack, and all those children who ordered Hot Lunch will be able to enjoy their hotdogs and then be dismissed at 12:55pm for the monthly staff meeting.  If your child did not order Hot Lunch, then please make sure you send them to school with their lunch as well as their snack.

  • Lost and Found

Once again our Lost and Found bin is overflowing with uniform pieces, outerwear, food containers, etc.  Please have your children check the Lost and Found bin for any misplaced items, and feel free to check the bin yourself the next time you are at the school.  Any items left in the bin at the end of our Sports Day on June 7th will be donated to charity.

  • Planning Day - June 10th

Please note that there will be no school for students on Monday, June 10th as the school staff gathers to plan for the 2019-2020 school year.  Please also note that as there is no school that day, the Thunder Club will also be closed.

  • Work Bee - June 8th

The final Work Bee to qualify for parent participation hours for the 2018-2019 school year will take place on June 8th from 9:00am to 2:00pm.  If you still require parent participation hours, please make every effort to attend this Work Bee.  We are hoping that the weather will allow for lots of outside work to be done, so if you are able to please bring gardening gloves, trimmers, and cordless garden tools.

  • Neat Uniforms - Fitting Day

Neat Uniforms will be at the school on Tuesday, June 11th from 2:00-7:00pm for our annual Fitting Day.  This is a wonderful opportunity to have your child try on any uniform pieces that they may need for next school year.  However, please take into consideration that there will still be almost 3 months of growing before school reopens in September.  Please also note that the busiest time is from 2:00-4:00pm, so you may want to pick your children up after school, go home for an early dinner, and come back to the school in the evening as the crowd will have thinned out by then.

  • Staff Appreciation Luncheon

Help is needed for the Staff Appreciation Luncheon.  Please sign up if you are able to help with the set up and clean up on Tuesday, June 4th from 12:30-2:30pm by clicking here.  Thank you.
