Thunder News Flash – February 23, 2019

February 22, 2019
  • What do you want of me, Lord?

As you are probably aware, this has been a particularly difficult week for the Immaculate Conception school community in Delta.  This week our school theme is calling us to pray for them, and for everyone:

“O God, You are the preserver of men, and the keeper of our lives.  We commit ourselves to Your perfect care on the journey that awaits us.  We pray for a safe and auspicious journey.  Give Your angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways.  Let no evil befall us, nor any harm come to our dwelling that we leave behind.  Although we are uncertain of what the days may bring, may we be prepared for any event or delay, and greet such with patience and understanding.  Bless us O Lord, that we may complete our journey safely and successfully under Your ever watchful care.  Amen”

  • Spring Cleaning for Parent Participation Hours

    *Please note additional day added

St. James and St. Ann’s School, along with SJB, will be hosting a “Garage Clean Up” Work Bee over FOUR days in March.  This is a great opportunity for families who have been unable to meet the required number of Parent Participation hours in their task group.  Please join us on Friday – Monday, March 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th as we remove unwanted items from the garage storage that is behind our school.  We will be renting a dumpster to aid in our clean up so there will be plenty of work for everyone.

If you have students in both schools, you may divide your hours to claim Parent Participation hours at each school, but please no double dipping.

Also note that both schools will be using the same sign up sheet that you will find by clicking here.

  • Medication at School Reminder

This is just a reminder that students who need to take medication at school may not keep their medication on them or in their backpacks, with the exception of rescue inhalers for asthma and epi-pens for anaphylaxis.  If students need to take medication while at school, parents must have the appropriate paperwork completed, the medication must be kept at the school office, and it must be packaged appropriately.  This means it must be blister packed by the pharmacy and in its original packaging.  Any over the counter drugs must be in the original packaging and never opened.  For more information regarding this, please see the Parent Handbook on the school’s website.

  • ISO Someone with Small Engine Skills

We are still looking for someone to tune up and maintain our yard maintenance equipment.  If you, or a family member, has this skill please let us know!  Your expertise can be used to fulfill your 20 hour Parent Participation requirement.  Family members can donate their expertise to your participation requirements as well.

Please email Erika by clicking here for more information.

  • Parent Prayer Group

Come and join the Parent Prayer Group in praying the rosary for our school community at 8:30am every Thursday morning.  Please note that we meet each week in the school Library.  Small children and babies are welcome.

  • Thunderwear Thursday

This Thursday, February 28th, we will be celebrating Thunderwear Thursday.  Students may replace pieces of their uniform with Thunderwear items that they have.  For example, if they have a Thunderwear t-shirt they may wear that instead of their school shirt OR if they have Thunderwear sweatpants they may wear these instead of their uniform pants.  The more Thunderwear you have, the more uniform pieces you may replace!  Please note these days are not full dress down days, so students may not wear jeans or clothing items that are neither Thunderwear or uniform pieces.

  • Hospital Mass

The monthly Hospital Mass will take place this Sunday, February 24th at 4:00pm at the Sacred Space in the Abbotsford Hospital.  Any students wishing to read, please meet Mrs. Wakely at 3:45 at the Sacred Space.  This is a wonderful outreach opportunity for our students and their families.

  • Next Early Dismissal - March 5th

Please note that our next monthly early dismissal day will be on Tuesday, March 5th.  The students will be able to enjoy their Shrove Tuesday pancake lunch and then be dismissed at 12:55pm for the monthly staff meeting.  This change was made due to the fact that the following day is Ash Wednesday.  We will be celebrating Mass together and want the whole day to focus on this important day to begin our Lenten journey together.

  • Parent Support Group

The Parent Support Group will have their next meeting at 1:40pm on Tuesday, February 26th at the school.  All are welcome to attend.

  • Lost and Found

Our date to clear out the Lost and Found container came and went during our snow days last week.  So, we are once again appealing to parents to come and take a look in the Lost and Found container to see if any of your child’s items are in there.  We could probably open up an outerwear store with all the snow pants in the bin right now!  Please note that any items left in the Lost and Found after March 1st will be donated, and school uniform pieces will be placed into consignment.

  • Pink Shirt Day - February 27th

Across the country students will be wearing pink shirts on Wednesday, February 27th to focus on an anti-bullying message.  At St. James & St. Ann’s School we believe that every day is an “anti-bullying day”; however, we will also have a special focus on being kind to others on February 27th.  Students are encouraged to replace their school shirt with a pink shirt or t-shirt to help support this important message.  Please do not go out and buy a shirt just for this day, but instead consider borrowing a shirt or having your child wear a pink accessory to support this day – a pink hair band, a pink ribbon or pink sticker on their school shirt, etc.  Please note this is not a dress down day, but simply an opportunity to wear a different shirt to school that day.
