Grade 6

  • Class Overview

  • Grade 6

Welcome to Grade 6! Our classroom is a dynamic and engaging learning environment that is designed to meet the needs of all learners. We believe in hands-on learning and incorporating art into all subjects to engage both sides of the brain and make learning fun. As students approach the end of their elementary school years, they are also developing important leadership skills. They are learning from their next-door neighbours, the Grade 7s, and becoming responsible leaders who look after their younger friends. At St. James & St. Ann’s School, we teach our Grade 6 students to be Christ-like and to strive to be the best version of themselves. We believe in fostering a caring and supportive community where students can develop their academic, social, and emotional skills. We are excited to see our Grade 6 students grow and thrive as they prepare for the challenges and opportunities that await them in the years ahead.

  • Curriculum Summary

  • Christian Education

As a Catholic school, our focus is not only on academic excellence but also on nurturing the spiritual growth of our students. We believe that every child is created in the image of God and has a unique purpose and calling in life. Our curriculum is designed to integrate Biblical principles into every subject and to help students develop a Christian worldview. In addition to classroom learning, we provide opportunities for students to participate in chapel, Three Bees demonstration of Christ-like behaviour, and Religion classes that encourage them to deepen their relationship with God and live out their faith in practical ways. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to make a positive impact in the world and to fulfill their God-given potential.

  • Language Arts

In Grade 6 Language Arts, students will have the opportunity to develop their writing and reading skills in a variety of ways. They will learn how to write effective paragraphs, expository essays, persuasive pieces, and creative writing pieces. Through these different types of writing, students will develop their ability to communicate their ideas clearly and persuasively. In addition to writing, students will also be reading a variety of texts, including two classic novels: “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis and “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. As they read these books, students will learn how to connect, infer, visualize, transform, and question information, which are all important reading comprehension strategies. Through this combination of writing and reading, students will develop strong critical thinking skills and the ability to communicate their ideas effectively. They will also gain a deeper appreciation for literature and the power of language. By the end of the course, students will be well-prepared for the challenges of high school and beyond.

  • Math

In Grade 6 Math, students will explore a wide range of mathematical concepts through games, hands-on activities, and group math challenges. We’ll be covering whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percents, geometry, and data analysis. Our goal is to help students develop a strong foundation in these key areas of math. Throughout the course, students will have plenty of opportunities to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving. We’ll be using games and group challenges to help students develop their analytical and logical skills. By working together in teams, students will also learn important communication and collaboration skills.

  • Science

In Grade 6 Science, students will be diving into a wide range of fascinating topics. We’ll be exploring chemistry, extreme environments, animal adaptations, the solar system, forces of physics, and body systems. Through a variety of projects, experiments, and hands-on activities, students will have the opportunity to learn in a fun and engaging way. Whether we’re conducting experiments to learn about chemical reactions or exploring the unique adaptations of animals in extreme environments, students will be developing important critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They’ll also learn how to work collaboratively in groups and communicate their ideas effectively.

  • Social Studies

In Grade 6 Social Studies, students will be engaging in discussions around some of the most pressing issues facing our world today. We’ll be exploring topics such as urbanization, poverty, globalization, and media influence. Through these discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complex forces shaping our world and the impact they have on diverse communities. To help students apply what they’ve learned in a meaningful way, we’ll be working on a year-end project where students will create their own utopian city. This project will challenge students to think creatively and critically about how to tackle difficult problems facing the world today. By imagining a world where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive, students will develop important problem-solving skills and a sense of social responsibility.

  • Arts Education

In Grade 6 Arts Education, students will have the opportunity to explore music, visual art, and the elements of art. Through a variety of projects and activities, students will learn about the different techniques and styles used in these art forms. One of the main goals of the course is to help students develop their creativity and self-expression. We’ll be using art principles as a vessel for self-expression and demonstrating learning across all subject areas. By incorporating art into other subjects, such as math and science, we’ll help students develop a deeper understanding of these subjects and make learning more engaging.

  • Career and Health Education

In Grade 6 Career and Health Education, students will have the opportunity to work on a self-guided interest project that will teach them real-life skills such as marketing, advertising, and selling a product. The project will culminate in an entrepreneur fair where students will propose, plan, design, and create a product that the school can purchase. Throughout the project, students will learn how to communicate their ideas effectively, work collaboratively in teams, and develop their creativity and problem-solving skills. By working on a project that has real-world applications, students will gain a deeper understanding of the practical skills needed to succeed in the workforce. At the entrepreneur fair, students will have the opportunity to showcase their products and put their marketing and sales skills to the test. This project will help students develop important communication skills and gain confidence in their ability to present their ideas to others.
